Apple iPhone 6 vs Apple iPhone 6S Mobile Phones - What's the difference?

The Apple iPhone 6S smartphone may look like a minor upgrade from the Apple iPhone 6 mobile phone. In fact it is actually a lot different than it first appears and it's the biggest leap I’ve seen from an 'S' labelled device.

Appearance wise, it has the same curvy build, and the same antenna lines on the back and also the same 4.7-inch, 720p display. However, its camera boasts of 4K recording, 3D Touch and a quicker CPU.

And if you already own the Apple iPhone 6 and are tempted to upgrade, then make sure you’re ready to pay the extra cash, as it costs a lot more too.

Design:

Apple iPhone 6S:

  • 7.1mm thick
  • 143g, series
  • 7000 anodised aluminium back
  • Space Grey/Silver/Gold/Rose Gold

Apple iPhone 6:

  • 6.9mm thick,
  • 129g, series
  • 6300 anodised
  • aluminium back
  • Space Grey/Silver/Gold

Even though it’s an attractive device, I would say that the Apple iPhone 6 is probably the least visually appealing iOS device to date. The reason for this is the combination of plastic antenna bands, and overly curved sides, not to mention the protruding camera lens all create something that lacks that typical Apple style.

The Apple iPhone 6S isn’t too different either, in fact the Apple iPhone 6S design hasn’t really improved, as it’s 2mm thicker, and 14g heavier. There's a worthwhile reason for that, though.

The enhanced build material used is series 7000 aluminium for the Apple iPhone 6S, in relation to the 6300 series used for the Apple iPhone 6. This makes the device a more firm, and more rigid in handling. It’s easier to manage in your hand and remains one of the most durable, well-built phones on the market today.

Screen:

Apple iPhone 6S

  • 4.7-inch,
  • 1334 x 750 IPS LCD
  • 326 ppi
  • 504 nits brightness
  • 3D Touch

Apple iPhone 6:

  • 4.7-inch
  • 1334 x 750 IPS LCD
  • 326 ppi
  • 504 nits brightness

As is stated above, the Apple iPhone 6S screen is near enough the same as the Apple iPhone 6. Both have a 4.7inch a sharp, vibrant display.

Even though the Apple iPhone 6 and the Apple iPhone 6S, both have the same screens, the biggest additional feature to the Apple iPhone 6S is the 3D Touch. 3D Touch is one of the most sophisticated application. It basically, detects how hard you press on the screen, and by doing so, it will bring up short-cut options. 3D Touch function is also used to preview links, emails and photos.

Performance:

Apple iPhone 6S:

  • Apple A9 64-bit dual-core
  • 1.84GHz,
  • PowerVR GT7600 GPU,
  • 2GB RAM

Apple iPhone 6:

  • Apple A8 64-bit dual-core
  • 1.4GHz
  • PowerVR GX6450 GPU
  • 1GB RAM

One of the most obvious differences between the Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6S, is the arrival of the 2GB RAM available in the Apple iPhone 6S. And with this enhancement the changes are noticeable, and the advantages of this are enormous.

Browsing the internet is amazingly quick, as you are able to jump back to a web page or an app, with ease. There’s no lag time between applications. The 3D Touch makes navigation easier and efficient.

Another improvement is the processor, with the A8 chips replaced by the A9, as is common with Apple to update the processor every year. With this upgrade, the general performance of the phone is a lot quicker.

Noticeably though, the CPU power has increased by 70 percent, and the GPU performance has gone up by a considerable 90 percent.

Camera:

Apple iPhone 6S:

  • 12-megapixel
  • phase detection
  • dual LED 'True Tone' flash
  • 4K video
  • 5-megapixel front camera

Apple iPhone 6:

  • 8-megapixel
  • phase detection
  • dual LED 'True Tone' flash
  • 1080p video
  • 1.2-megapixel front camera

One of the features which everybody looks out of the most is the camera. The Apple iPhone 6 has an 8 megapixel sensor incorporated with larger pixels to allow more brightness in the pictures. The Apple iPhone 6S has enhanced these features and has an improved 12-megapixel version, which of course adds more detail to your images. That increase in detail is carried through to video, which is now full 4K.

The front selfie, FaceTime camera has also increased a mere 1.2-megapixel sensor to a better 5-megapixel version. You'll even be able to use the screen as a front-facing dual-tone flash, which makes for vastly improved selfies.

Battery:

Apple iPhone 6S

  • 1715 mAh non-removable battery

Apple iPhone 6

  • 1810 mAh non-removable battery

With the new Taptic Engine that helps power 3D Touch, comes a reduction in battery capacity from 1,810mAh to 1,715mAh.

The new Low Power Mode ensure the Apple iPhone 6S's battery life is similar to the Apple iPhone 6, and it's largely right.

Storage:

Apple iPhone 6S:

  • 16GB
  • 64GB
  • 128GB
  • non-expandable

Apple iPhone 6:

  • 16GB
  • 64GB
  • 128GB
  • non-expandable

The storage options on these two Apple iPhone's are identical, so nothing has changed with the newer model. Although the 16GB option cannot cater for the needs of the modern smart phone.

Conclusion

The Apple iPhone 6S has some major internal changes, like the 3D Touch, and the enhanced performance. Although the design of both devices is actually very similar, with the Apple iPhone 6S weighing slightly more than the Apple iPhone 6. The Apple iPhone 6S is more sophisticated with better quality dual cameras giving sharper, brighter images. The battery power is reduced in the Apple iPhone 6S due to the 3D Touch application, but never mind that, with its power saving mode, the device will be able to run for longer. Overall, the Apple iPhone 6 and the Apple iPhone 6S may look very similar; they are in fact, very different phones.
