As with most Apple iPhone's, everybody wants to know what the difference between the Apple iPhone 5 and the Apple iPhone 5S smartphone. Is it worth upgrading your mobile phone? Are there many changes in the latest version? What are the differences? Is the Apple iPhone 5S a better device?
When looking at the Apple iPhone 5 and the Apple iPhone 5S together, they actually look identical. Both of the phones have the same dimensions of 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and both weigh at 112g. They also require the same sort of Nano SIM card.
In regards to the design, the only physical differences are the redesigned home button, which has the new Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It is surrounded by a stainless steel ring. The other difference is the dual LED flash around the back.
The Apple iPhone 5 is available in two colours, black and white. However, the Apple iPhone 5S has a more diverse range of options available, such as, silver, space grey, and gold options. It’s up to the individual with their choice of preference, as the gold version can appear to be attractive to some, yet ugly to others.
The Apple iPhone 5 and the Apple iPhone 5S have similar features in the display department. They both have the same 4 inch retina display, with the same 640 x 1136 pixel resolution. They also have the same LED – backlit IPS LCD. Not to mention the identical cornering gorilla glass and oleophobic coating. Compared to the other phones within the same price range, the Apple iPhone 5 and the Apple iPhone 5S have a smaller display. However, it still functions brilliantly for gaming, video-watching and taking photos.
Although both of the devices feature an 8 Megapixel camera on the back and a 1.2 Megapixel lens on the front, there is still more to be added.
Apple has made some enhancements to the Apple iPhone 5S camera by adding image stabilisation, live photo filters and a new Burst mode that takes 10 shots per second and automatically suggests the best one.
Whereas the Apple iPhone 5 had the typical standard LED flash, the Apple iPhone 5S has a dual LED (True Tone) flash to reduce the intensity of the light thus aiding you in taking better quality photos.
With the Apple iPhone 5S comes the much improved image sensor, lens cover and f/2.4 aperture – it also has a 15 per cent larger sensor and an improved f/2.2 aperture to let in more light for brighter results.
The front-mounted iSight camera also features an improved backside illumination sensor (BIS) for better performance when FaceTiming in the gloom.
Ultimately, the Apple iPhone 5S can take much better 1080p video too. The main 8MP camera now has a slow-motion video feature in addition to video stabilisation, to reduce unwanted camera wobble.
As with all new phones, especially, flagship models, there is a lot of hype about the performance of the new device. Apple always delivers, and they haven’t disappointed us either. Where the Apple iPhone 5 has an A6 processor, the Apple iPhone 5S debuts Apple's 64-bit A7 chip (the first 64-bit processor to appear in a smartphone).
With over one billion transistors, Apple claims that the A7 is super fast, nearly twice as much as the A6, and 40 times more powerful than the original iPhone.
The A7 also includes an M7 co-processor designed to monitor the data from the phone's accelerometer, compass and gyroscope.
The sensor will be able to accurately track your movements, and this helpful for fitness apps. There are also other benefits such as the Maps app can switch to walking directions if it detects you aren't driving. The M7 can also reduce network activity if the sensor data tells it that your phone hasn't moved for some time.
The Apple iPhone 5S comes with iOS 7 pre-installed and the Apple iPhone 5 owners are able to upgrade their phones too.
However, the option for downloading the Touch ID app isn’t available to Apple iPhone 5. The Touch ID is only available for the Apple iPhone 5S and it offers fingerprint security and works with the fingerprint sensor built into the Home button.
As with the Apple iPhone 5, the Apple iPhone 5S has the same options available for storage. The phones are available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.
The Apple iPhone 5 has the non-removable Li-Po 1440 mAh battery with talk time of only 8 hours and stand by time of 225 hours. It also has music time of 40 hours. The Apple iPhone 5S, on the other hand, has improved slightly. It has the non-removable Li-Po 1560 mAh battery, but with talk time of 10 hours and standby time of 250 hours and the music time is 40 hours, the same as the Apple iPhone 5. So with the Apple iPhone 5S, you get a slightly better deal regarding the battery.
If you would like to see if the Apple iPhone 5S is a better upgrade to the Apple iPhone 5, then in all honesty, there isn’t much difference to the two devices. It doesn’t really have a better screen, or improved storage capacity. The camera hasn’t really improved too much either.
